Jun 23, 2017 Unfortunately, I found I had to launch the 'Microsoft Mouse' preference pane after every reboot to get the extra buttons to work correctly. You can add it to Users & Groups Login Items, but will still have to close the System Preferences window after rebooting. Microsoft's installer wrote something in some hidden place that simply can't be found. The point of this exercise is I have the mouse: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 USB, and want a mouse driver that allows me to assign the Option key to a mouse click (Option + click). For some unknown reason, Microsoft removed this capability.

Features[edit]
Software features may only be available with certain mice models. (Button options are specific to the selected model.) On Mac OS X 10.4-10.7.x, IntelliPoint features can be accessed by opening Microsoft Mouse in System Preferences.[2]
Depending on the software version and specific mouse product, users can define mouse buttons to run any executable program or file they desire (or a control key + letter combination) and can even define buttons for different functions in chosen programs.
With IntelliPoint 4, users were able to specify mouse wheel behavior to scroll one screen at a time. This feature was useful in situations where the user had to work with windows of varying size and a fixed scroll rate alternated from being too fast or too slow depending on each window. This feature was incorporated into the Windows XP operating system[3] and removed in IntelliPoint 5.[citation needed] The 'Alt+Tab' button combination was also replaced with 'Next Window,' effectively preventing users from alternating between specific programs, and instead having to cycle through one by one (although this can be hacked back in the registry[4]).
Scrolling[edit]
Universal Scrolling is a software function within IntelliPoint that allows a scroll wheel to work with programs that do not natively support that method of input. If a program supports scroll wheels natively, the Universal Scrolling feature will generally not interfere with the native implementation.
Supported mice[edit]
IntelliPoint supports all known Microsoft mice, as well as generic 3/5-button mice.
Note: Version 8.0 and above dropped PS/2 support for the following list. As even adapters cannot assist, Microsoft keeps version 7.1 as an offered download for users who still own mice with PS/2 connectors (instead of USB).[5]

Microsoft Intellipoint Keyboard
IntelliPoint software enables you to customize the unique features of your Microsoft® mouse to fit your needs. With IntelliPoint mouse software, you can reassign each mouse button—including the wheel button—to perform a command or keyboard shortcut, like Undo, Close, or an application-specific function. You can also modify mouse settings, such as pointer speed and updated horizontal scrolling. IntelliPoint 6.2 even offers biometrics support for advanced identity management. If you have a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard, you will need to have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed.
Instructions
When downloading, select the 'Save' option to save the installation file to a location on your hard disk, and then double-click the installation file when you are ready to start Setup.
Make sure to remove any mouse programs from your computer before installing this software.
If you are using a Microsoft keyboard and mouse desktop product, you may also need to download and install IntelliType Pro keyboard software.
